Take the 2010 Census Challenge
The “Show Me City” is nationally-recognized as a thriving community with charming neighborhoods, bountiful businesses and robust recreation. As residents start another great year here, there is an important task that everyone should tackle: filling out their 2010 Census form.
Every 10 years, the Census Bureau sets out to count all individuals living in the United States—citizens and noncitizens. The goal is to compile a complete numerical picture of the nation’s residents, including people of all ages, races and ethnic groups. Taking time to complete the Bureau’s 10-question form is not only important—the collected data affects how more than $3 trillion in federal and state funding will be spent on neighborhood improvements, transportation, public health and more—it’s also required.
“It is important that Missouri City step up and take an active role in this vital count,” said Gabriel Sanchez, U.S. Census Bureau Dallas Regional Director. “An accurate count affects almost every decision in your community, from building new schools and hospitals, to improving roads.”
Individuals will receive questionnaires in the mail the third week of March and if possible, should mail them back before April 1—“Census Day”, a day when the federal government should be able to look at the information that respondents report to know the makeup of their households. Census workers will deliver forms to households that do not submit completed questionnaires by April 1. Dating back to 1790 and our country’s first Census count, the 2010 form will have one of the shortest questionnaires in our history with only 10 questions, which should take about 10 minutes to complete and will affect the next 10 years of our lives.
Stressing the importance of participating in the count, Missouri City’s Director of Planning Ornita Green said, “the population figures determine our number of seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and how the State Legislature may be redistricted. It’s imperative that everyone participate fully in the 2010 Census.”
It is important to note that information residents provide will be protected and that all Census employees have taken an oath to protect confidentiality and are subject to a jail term, a fine, or both for disclosing information that could identify a respondent or household.
The Census Bureau is recruiting employees to help with their 2010 operations. Those interested in jobs can call (866) 861-2010. Callers will be directed to the appropriate office to schedule a skills test, which is the first step. To take a practice test and find out more details, visit: www.2010censusjobs.gov.
Missouri City residents whose homes are in Harris County, can call these Census phone numbers—(832) 363-8280 and (713) 264-8040—if they have questions about forms, translation or need help filling out the questionnaires.
